Colds and coughs are very
common in infants--in fact, according to Mayo Clinic, most babies will have eight
to 10 respiratory infections before reaching two years of age. While
over-the-counter cough suppressants and cold medicines may seem like an obvious
solution to these problems, the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly warns
against their use in infants and children under two years of age. Concerned
parents might instead consider using low-risk home remedies to relieve coughs
and chest congestion in infants. Consult your child's pediatrician with any
questions you may have regarding your child's health.
Humidifier
A
cool-mist humidifier moistens the air and helps to soothe a baby's irritated
airways. Clean the humidifier according to the manufacturer's guidelines to
prevent mold contamination. If you don't have a humidifier and need a quick
fix, consider running a hot shower or boiling a pot of hot water with the baby
in the room.
Physical Therapy
The
American Academy of Pediatrics recommends at-home physical therapy for babies
suffering from chest congestion and coughs. Lay the baby face-down across your
knees and tap his back using a cupped hand. This process helps to loosen mucus
and makes the baby's cough more productive. Use this method as needed until the
baby's congestion has abated.
Eucalyptus
After
consulting a pediatrician, consider adding a few drops of eucalyptus to a
humidifier or a pot of boiling water. According to the University of Maryland
Medical Center, eucalyptus can help to ease coughs and chest congestion;
however, it may worsen symptoms if the baby is allergic. Do not apply
eucalyptus oil directly to the baby's skin or give the baby any essential oil
by mouth.
Environmental Considerations
Keep a
congested baby away from airborne particulate matter, including pollen,
pollution, and cigarette smoke. Do not allow anyone to smoke in your home,
particularly while the baby is recovering from illness. Avoid all harsh
"chemical" cleaning products, including bleach, ammonia and furniture
polish. An air-filter in your home may help to minimize pollutants and
irritants.
